This book furthers the discussion concerning Important pedagogy and its practical applications for urban contexts. It addresses two looming, yet beneath-explored questions that experience emerged with the ascendancy of Important pedagogy within the educational discourse: (1) What does Important pedagogy seem like in work with urban youth? and (2) How can a scientific investigation of Important work enacted in urban contexts concurrently draw upon and push the core tenets of Important pedagogy? Addressing the tensions inherent in enacting Important pedagogy – between working to disrupt and to successfully navigate oppressive institutionalized structures, and between the practice of Important pedagogy and the present standards-driven climate – The Art of Important Pedagogy seeks to generate authentic internal and external dialogues among educators searching for texts that supply guidance for teaching for a more socially just world.
